<image:title>projects - Berlin Live / Work office and apartment, Berlin, Germany</image:title>
<image:caption>The live/work unit is composed of an offices on the ground floor, an apartments on the first - third floors, and a garden to the rear of the apartment at the foot of an existing brick retaining wall. The design deepens the connection between the city block and the building - inside to outside, garden to street, live to work. The fabric of the existing building has been carefully preserved and exposed - steel beams, oak windows, marble floor, brick columns, and preserves the thermal mass, natural light and ventilation germane to the original building. Living area, working area, sleeping area, eating area, bathing areas, are in a spatial continuum, carefully separated through materials and colors relating to climatic, visual, aural, and haptic qualities, with minimal use of doors or partitions. The built-in furniture elements such as storage units, kitchen units, wash basins, become part of the continuity of space making and material strategy, using natural materials in their natural color and finish, incorporating lighting and working with the scale of ‘oversized’ elements such as cupboards and doors that become spatial elements. Hard and soft, textured and smooth, colored and white surfaces on walls and floors denote zones of work, rest and reflection. Brighter colors are incorporated into the kitchen presses on both floors, work-tops are in stone. The furniture in the office is entirely bespoke; tables are made as thin as possible from aluminium foam sandwich panels with linoleum surfaces and beech edge trims, supported on aluminium legs. All power, networking points are supplied from a suspended shelf/display and lighting system which frees the marble floor of cables. Translucent display panes with integrated magnetic strips are suspended from the ceiling. A pneumatic door hides the fax and printing equipment within a large timber box propped on two stainless steel legs.</image:caption>

<image:title>projects - Leinster House Welcoming and Security Pavilion, Dublin, Ireland</image:title>
<image:caption>Since 1922 Leinster House has been the home of the Oireachtas, the parliament of the Republic of Ireland. The project is a simple glass pavilion that streamlines and secures the process of entering the Oireachtas. The Pavilion is a trapezoid in plan, due to the orchestration between the existing stone Pavilion, the existing London Plane trees, and the spatial demands of the brief to have adequate waiting space for groups visiting the Oireachtas. In order to provide as unobstructed view as possible, structure is placed principally in the roof. Glue laminated ‘X’ beams provide all lateral restraint, allowing the columns to the inside of the courtyard to take vertical (dead) loads only. The desk is the instrument which guides people through the building, creating a generous and secure entry for members of Parliament and members of the public. It is curving around the tree to create a security screening point through which people must pass, and finally providing waiting space once they have been screened. <image:title>projects - SAP building, Galway, Ireland</image:title>
<image:caption>The SAP building in Galway accomodates 360 staff dealing with technical queries from around the globe. The low energy design strategy makes use of solar and wind power to provide a naturally ventilated and cooled environment for staff throughout the 18 hour working period. The building was completely designed before site selection was finalised. Therefore it was decided to treat the climate as the site, and design the building as a naturally ventilated low-energy building specifically tuned to the climate conditions in Galway. Because it is a high-density occupancy building it has high ventilation demand and high cooling load. The building creates a balanced environment for employee comfort and working using the minimum amount of energy from non-renewable resources using free cooling from outside air as the only cooling source and an atrium separates office floor-plates which are connected via bridge structures.
